He started newstylesound recordings at the turn of the millennium to feature his tech house duo dj2 (with Funkmotor). The first single, "Plural" was an underground smash, and has since been reissued on Grant Dell's Pancake imprint with a remix by Mazi. Soon after, it was scooped up by "Evil" Eddie Richards for his critically acclaimed tech house mix comp on Fabric London. Further dj2 singles, as well as downtempo releases on Wide Hive with his duo Cubik & Origami and tracks and remixes with Andrew Phelan on Olive Records, Turnaround-Sound, and So Sound (upcoming) share his core aesthetic: wide ranging live instrumentation married with sizzling cutting-edge production and heavy doses of jazz and funk. Origami has helped to popularize and legitimize live playing in the dj sphere through frequent performances with dj2 (live bass, drums, and electronics), Cubik & Origami (live bass, electronics, and turntablism), his bass-and-decks sets with Andrew Phelan, and his solo dj and live PA sets, which sometimes find him beatmatching and mixing with one hand, while playing bass with the other. His successful monthly party Folded, thrown with Andrew Phelan, is a place where San Francisco's best selectors and live musicians can throw down a blend of wicked tracks and burning chops to an enthusiastic crowd of dancers. With multiple solo projects ready to break out, a steady production schedule and a growing plethora of live bookings, this bay area native seems ready to do something. |
